How long have you been acting?
I’ve been acting for three years now. My first job was a music video with Janet Jackson. The song was called “I want you”. That was a very crazy experience. Meeting Janet was almost like meeting her brother Michael Jackson. I’m a huge Michael Jackson fan!
What type of roles are you most interested in?
Comedy roles are my favorite, but dramatic roles are challenging for me.
You have a video game on XBOX, PSP and PLAYSTATION coming out in December called “Pimp my Ride” how does it feel to be animated?
It was actually a cool and fun experience. I never thought that I would be a character in a video game, by the way the name of my character is Jason Butler. I mean actually being able to use me as a character in the game is just crazy! But look out for it! It’s coming to a store near you real soon.
Can you tell me more about your Nike Campaign? I understand it’s in several sports magazines as well as hip-hop magazines.
Yes it is! It’s in magazines like Dime, XXL, Vibe, Complex, Sports Illustrated and ESPN.
You were cast as one of the freedom writers in the movie “Freedom Writers” tell us about that?
Yes, I was cast in the upcoming movie “Freedom Writers”. That was also a great experience! We shot the movie in Los Angeles, and Long Beach. The movie is based on a true story by Erin Gruwell. I’m not going to tell you about the movie because it would take all the fun out of it, just go and see it when it hit theatres in January 07! Trust me you wouldn’t want to miss it!
How was it working with two-time Oscar winner Hillary Swank?
Working with Hillary Swank was incredible! Even though I didn’t talk to her much, I learned things from her by just sitting there and paying attention to her every movement. Observing how she brings a character to life. Watching what was she does when she’s on break, which was studying lines over and over again.
Mario is starring in the film as well, how would you describe him?
Mario is cool, laid back and a caring person. When it comes down to getting his work done, he takes it very serious and he doesn’t like to be bothered. Otherwise, Mario is real cool. I’m looking forward to working with him again.
I understand you really enjoyed working with this cast? You have said this is the best cast you have worked with thus far in your career.
Yes! I love the people that they cast me with in “Freedom Writers” One person in the movie; we became good friends as soon as we met. I actually played his best friend in the movie. His name is Deance Wyatt, Deance and I are like soul brothers. It’s so weird. Every time Deance and I go out to party or a little get together, Deance and I end up wearing the same clothes and we don’t even call each or nothing. Also I became good friends with a young actress name Vanetta Smith, she is like a little sister to me.
In December 2006 you have a photo shoot coming out in Esquire Magazine with George Clooney. Tell us, how was it working with another Oscar winner?
Working with George Clooney was fun. Because, he’s really funny. I had a good shot with George. George is standing on a stoop, and I’m right under him looking up at him, while he is talking to everybody. So that’s all I’m going to tell you about the photo shoot for Esquire Magazine. One more thing….go out and get the magazine in December.
What do you do when your not acting/modeling or playing basketball?
When I am not playing basketball, acting or modeling I am usually chilling with my friends playing the video games or watching a NBA game or NFL game, I am a sports fanatic!
I was told you have a serious love for basketball, what makes you love the game so much?
I love basketball so much because of three people…Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Vince Carter. I’ve been watching Michael Jordan since I was 6 years old. Hitting shot after shot. All the wars with Dominique Wilkins in dunk contest, wining titles and so forth. I’ve been watching Kobe Bryant since his High School games, because his high school was not to far from where I was in Pennsylvania. Then last but not least Vince Carter, I’ve been watching him since his days of North Carolina, because he’s so explosive off the jump! That’s what makes me like him so much because he doesn’t care who’s in his way, he going to dunk on you either way it goes. Another reason I like Vince is because he and I was born on the same day.
Do you get to the movies often?
Umm…I go to the movies but not a lot because I can never make time to go. My schedule has been so hectic this year. But I try to go every chance I get.
What type of friends do you surround yourself with?
I have cool and supportive friends. I have kept my old friends that have been there since day one. Like Kemaney Young, Kenny Kinard, Lee Hendrix, TC Chapman and Miguel Godinez. Even though we all have our differences and we argued a few times. They are still going to be there for me.
Now if you don’t mind, I wasn’t to ask you some personal questions. All the ladies out there want to know if you have a girlfriend?
If I have a girlfriend????hahaha Naw. I don’t have a Girl. I’m single-free. It’s going to be that way for a long time.
Do you date often?
Umm…not often. I date every now and then. But when I do go on a date I try my best to make it the best date possible.
When is the last time you took a girl on a romantic date?
What kind of girls do you like?
I like tall, athletic and or classy females. A women that has goals set for them and have a good idea on what they want in life. Not just sitting around waiting for a man to sweep them off their feet….I don’t roll that way.
Tell us who the most important person in your life is?
Well, I have people that are important to me in my life like my Mother because of everything that she does, she does it for me. She loves me and often tells me that I am the best son in the world. My Grandmother Wanda, because she loves me for who I am and not for who I want to be. My Father, because even though my father and I haven’t been close until these last couple of years I love him because he can teach me things that no other father would be able would be able to teach his son about the streets and I’m able to talk to him about anything, because my father let’s me talk and just be myself I love him for that.
What is your most prize possession?
My sidekick 3, because that phone can get me out of tight situations. Such as map quest, when I’m lost. It has AIM, Yahoo and MSN Messenger, Internet and a Phone. It’s so valuable to me.
What would you do later in life, if you couldn’t be an actor?
I would like to own my own business like my Grandmother Wanda; she owns a restaurant in Pittsburgh. I would also love to play basketball professionally.
What is your next project?
I just booked another film called “Hard to Play”. So look out this film in the Summer or Fall ‘07
If there was one word to describe Dre Bowie, what would that be?
BLESSED! I say that because that is exactly what is says on my tattoo on my upper right shoulder. My tattoo is a cross with a banner going around it……On the banner is says “I’M BLESSED”
Let me see, the last time I took someone on a romantic date it was about 2 months ago. We had a fun time I took her to dinner and a movie then we chilled the rest of the night at this park where u can see the whole city. It was so tight.
